Story
Set against the backdrop of Mughal-Rajput conflicts, the Khamerans are caught in the crossfire, eventually becoming enslaved and oppressed by the British regime. Desperate and forced into a life of crime, they resort to looting the wealthy. The British attempt to broker peace with the Khamerans, enlisting the help of police officer Shuddh Singh (Sanjay Dutt) to mediate. Shamshera (Ranbir Kapoor), the leader of the Khamerans, agrees to the deal. However, the British betray them, trapping the Khamerans. To save his people, Shamshera sacrifices himself. His son Malla (also played by Ranbir Kapoor) takes on his father’s mantle. Will Malla succeed in avenging his father and freeing the Khamerans? This forms the crux of the story.
Plus Points
Ranbir Kapoor shines in his dual roles as Shamshera and Malla, delivering an impressive performance with a commanding screen presence. His portrayal, energy, and body language are captivating throughout the film. The action scenes, particularly a train sequence in the pre-climax, are visually impressive and elevate the film’s appeal. The VFX work is also commendable. Vaani Kapoor adds glamour and performs decently in her role.
Minus Points
The film’s primary drawback is its clichéd storyline. The plot follows a predictable, overused formula, offering no fresh or novel elements. As a result, much of the film feels repetitive, and viewers can easily foresee the events.
Neither half of the movie manages to engage the audience, with the emotional depth lacking significantly. The film’s narrative resembles a blend of several period dramas, contributing to a sense of déjà vu. Sanjay Dutt’s character, in particular, is poorly written, and his performance, including dialogue delivery, becomes frustrating over time. The film is overly long, dragging to the point where it tests the audience’s patience. Additionally, the poor dubbing and the underutilization of supporting characters further detract from the overall experience.
Technical Aspects
On the technical front, Shamshera excels. Yash Raj Films’ production values are visible on screen, with the film being presented on a grand scale. The art direction is superb, and the visual aesthetics are well-crafted.
While the music is decent, the background score fails to enhance the action sequences. The cinematography is good, and the VFX work is notable. However, despite these technical strengths, the film lacks a core emotional connection. The extended and unsatisfactory climax only adds to the film’s shortcomings.
Director Karan Malhotra’s choice of a predictable script and his ineffective execution leave much to be desired. The inclusion of uninspiring elements makes the film a slog, and Malhotra missed the opportunity to make better use of Ranbir Kapoor’s talent.
Verdict
Overall, Shamshera is a disappointing and drawn-out period drama. Ranbir Kapoor delivers a stellar performance in dual roles, but even that can’t salvage the film. With a dull narrative and lackluster execution, Shamshera fails to offer anything new or exciting. It’s a movie you can safely skip.
