Tamil actor Arun Vijay makes his digital debut with the web series Tamil Rockerz on SonyLiv, marking AVM Productions’ first foray into the digital space. Let’s dive into how the series fares.
Story:
The infamous piracy website Tamil Rockerz threatens to leak the highly anticipated, 300-crore budget film Garuda—starring Amazing Star Aditya—before its theatrical release. Distressed by the situation, the producer of Garuda, Mathi (Azhagam Perumal), approaches the police for help. ACP Rudra (Arun Vijay), still mourning his wife’s death, is tasked with stopping the piracy gang. He is supported by a special team, including cyber forensic expert Sandhya (Vani Bhojan) and cyber cell SI Bhanu (Vinodhini). Can Rudra and his team prevent the piracy? Who is behind the operation? These questions drive the plot forward.
Positives:
A standout moment comes from MS Bhaskar’s cameo as Vani Bhojan’s father, where he emphasizes the devastating impact of piracy on the film industry. This thought-provoking scene questions the morality of viewers who choose to watch pirated content, affecting the livelihoods of many.
The series delves into how piracy networks operate, showcasing thorough research. Arun Vijay shines with a strong performance, carrying much of the series. Among the female leads, Vani Bhojan has a significant role that fits well within the story, and she performs adequately. Azhagam Perumal impresses as a producer struggling with the looming threat of piracy, while Vinodhini delivers a solid performance. The show does well in highlighting various facets of the film industry, and the initial episodes are engaging and well-paced.
Negatives:
However, the core theme of the show gets sidetracked due to unnecessary focus on the personal histories of both the protagonist and antagonist, turning it into a revenge drama. Rudra’s personal struggles with his wife’s death add little emotional depth and could have been omitted.
Ishwarya Menon’s role is underutilized, leaving her with little screen time. After a promising start, the series loses momentum and feels unnecessarily long. For a thriller, a shorter, more concise narrative would have worked better, but the storyline drags on, testing the audience’s patience. The series would have been more effective with 6-7 episodes. While there are moments of suspense, they are too sparse. The open-ended climax hints at a second season, which feels unnecessary given the predictability throughout the show.
Technical Aspects:
Vikas Badisa’s music score is commendable, and Rajasekhar’s cinematography is visually appealing. AVM Productions’ lavish investment is evident in the series’ high production value. However, the editing could have been tighter, as the slow pacing detracts from the overall experience. Director Arivazhagan’s concept is intriguing, but the execution falls short. While there are some thrilling scenes, they aren’t enough to sustain interest.
Verdict:
Overall, Tamil Rockerz has an interesting premise but is bogged down by its predictable storyline and overemphasis on the revenge angle. The performances of Arun Vijay and the supporting cast, along with insightful glimpses into the film industry, are the show’s strengths. However, the script could have been more refined. If you’re drawn to the premise, you might find the series lacking in some areas.
